The Advising Office and the Advisors

The Undergraduate Advising Office is located in the Physical Science Building, room D 102. The Physical Science (http://www.asu.edu/map/) building is located on the corner of Tyler Mall and Palm walk, just south of University Avenue. To speak with the Undergraduate Advisor, Debra Campbell or Tom Avants please make appointment online at : http://chemistry.asu.edu/undergrad/adv_appointment.asp .

Freshmen Advising and Admission

If you meet all admission requirements ( http://www.asu.edu/admissions/requirements/summary.html#freshman) of the university and indicate you wish to major in either Chemistry or Biochemistry you will be admitted to our department. You can apply on line at: http://www.asu.edu/admissions/applyingtoasu/. All freshmen are strongly encouraged to participate in freshmen orientation (http://www.asu.edu/admissions/newstudentprograms/) to receive academic advising, participate in placement exams and register for courses.
All first time students are required to seek advising prior to registering for their first semester.

Transfer Advising and Admission

If you meet all admission requirements ( http://www.asu.edu/admissions/requirements/summary.html#transfer) of the university for a transfer student and indicate you wish to major in either Chemistry or Biochemistry you will be admitted to our department. You can apply on line at: http://www.asu.edu/admissions/applyingtoasu/fr_tr_nd.html. If all your transfer credits are from Arizona public colleges or universities run a D.A.R.S. report, found within the interactive web site https://dars.asu.edu/darswebstudent/servlet/ASUQuestionServlet and bring it with you when you come for advising.

If you have transfer credits from out-of-state schools, or private institutions in Arizona, the evaluation of your transfer credits is a two-step process. First you must meet with an advisor in the CLAS Office of Academic Program, Social Science 111, (480) 965-6506. CLAS advisors will determine which credits apply towards university general studies http://www.asu.edu/aad/catalogs/general/genstudiesintro.html#88218 and college graduation requirements http://clas.asu.edu/students/degreerequirements/CLASRequirements.htm .  Credits toward your Chemistry or Biochemistry major will be evaluated by our department.  Students should come prepared with course descriptions of all out-of state courses they feel might count toward major requirements.  Call our Advising Office (480) 965-5065 to determine current office hours.

Transfer students who do not transfer in Chemistry core courses will most likely not graduate in less than four years.

Degree Requirement

All degree programs have three levels of requirements that you must fulfill to receive your degree; university general studies requirements ( http://uc.asu.edu/advising/genstudies.php) College of Liberal Arts and Scienceshttp://clas.asu.edu/students/degreerequirements/CLASrequirements.htm) requirements and the requirements of your major. A typical semester schedule will consist of courses out of each area so those requirements are evenly spaced. The chemistry and biochemistry majors require careful planning. Be aware that most courses will have pre or co requisites and that not all courses are offered each semester. It is very important to seek advisement to remain on track for completing all courses in a timely manner. You may refer to the list of undergraduate courses for course descriptions, pre-requisites and the semester they are offered. You may refer to the checksheets for each major for a flow chart indicating typical progression from one semester to the next for that major.

DARS (Degree Audit Report System)

DARS (Degree Audit Report System) is an automated process that matches courses a student has completed with the requirements of a particular academic degree program (DPROG) resulting in a report that shows the student which requirements are satisfied and which requirements remain to be fulfilled. The DARS report is available through the ASU interactive web site at: https://dars.asu.edu/darswebstudent/servlet/ASUQuestionServlet. A DARS report will only be accurate if all courses from out of-state and 4 year institutions have been officially evaluated and coded into the computer system (see transfer advising).
