Undergraduate Research in Chemistry & Biochemistry

How do I get credit for research?

Research classes are not lecture classes, but a way to give credit to students who are conducting undergraduate research for professors in the department.

Students conducting undergraduate research can obtain credit by enrolling in a research class. Students are required to already have a faculty member's approval to work in his/her lab before they are allowed to register for the class. For this class, students are required to dedicate a minimum of four hours/week/credit hour during a regular semester or 12 hours/week/credit hour during a five-week summer session. Students can register for one to three credit hours per semester for a total of six credit hours. Students are also allowed to conduct undergraduate chemistry and biochemistry-related research for professors in other departments (e.g. School of Life Sciences), with the opportunity to enroll in a research class.

If you are interested in participating in undergraduate research, the first step is to find a research advisor (i.e. a professor willing to let you work in his/her laboratory for the semester). It is up to the individual professors to decide which students to accept into their research groups. We suggest that you start by reading the research descriptions of the various professors in the department. (http://chemistry.asu.edu/undergrad/UGResearch_Areas.asp) Once you have decided which type of research you would like to experience, you should contact those professors directly and request an appointment to discuss undergraduate research opportunities in their research groups.

Students who are interested in pursuing research should approach faculty whose research is of interest to them to ask about joining their research groups. Tasks required by undergraduate research vary widely and are based on an individual agreement between you and your faculty supervisor. Students may receive credit, which can be utilized towards fulfilling the upper-division elective requirement for chemistry and biochemistry majors. You must have prior approval from your faculty sponsor to obtain the schedule line number required when registering for these courses.
