Yonggang Ke is a graduate student in the lab of Professor Hao Yan.

I have learned a lot of new techniques at ASU and can do exciting work. The faculty are very nice to the students, and the weather is terrific!

DNA as a Nanoscale Building Material
Professor Hao Yan and his group are taking advantage of the unique self-assembling properties of DNA to create nanometer sized arrays and other architectures.  Shown here are AFM images of several structures that are constructed by controlled hybridization of DNA strands of different lengths.  Shorter strands of specific sequences can be used to control the shape of longer strands, generating "tiles" that act as nanoscale building material, and even nanometer sized letters.
