Eye on Students
2008 Visitation Weekend and Poster Presentation

The Admissions Committee has been busy reviewing 414 applications for the upcoming 2008-2009 academic year. To date the department has made admission offers to 71 prospective students all of whom have very impressive credentials in their academic and research accomplishments. During the weekend of February 29, the department held their annual Visitation Weekend to recruit the domestic students who were accepted in to the program. twenty seven visitors attended the event to learn more about the research being done in our department and meet with faculty and graduate students.

In addition to meeting our faculty for individual/small group appointments, the visiting students explored the various laboratory facilities including the Biodesign Institute, High Resolution Electron Microscopy, Keck Environmental labs and the NMR labs. Van tours were given of Tempe and the surrounding area to show the impressive uniqueness of the terrain and possible areas for housing. A number of the guests even ventured to the top of "A Mountain" for a more complete view. To show our visitors that we do have "green grass" in our environment, we provided a dinner on the patio of the Karsten Golf Course, where they continued their interaction with faculty and students.

The Poster Session was also a success. It was held in the Carson Ballroom in Old Main, which gave plenty of space for our graduate students to explain their research and answer questions about their projects. Intriguing presentations and discussions could be heard throughout the room as faculty, current graduate students and the prospective students engaged in conversation. Many of the visitors commented that they didn't realize the full scope of chemical and biochemical research at Arizona State University and were impressed by the number of interdisciplinary projects.

Our Visitation Weekend went very well and ended with a relaxing BBQ at Papago Park - What a fantastic feast! Faculty, staff and graduate students worked together to make this weekend an enjoyable event. Thank you to everyone who participated and to all our graduate students who took the time to interact with our visiting students, answering their questions and showing them we have an impressive graduate program with serious research and a fun side with a great student body. We hope to see our visitors again in the fall. as new students in our program.
