The electronics shop, located in the basement of the C-wing, includes a manager and four full time personnel specializing in various areas of technical support. Broad areas of expertise include computer hardware and configuration support; systems, applications and network software support; scientific instrumentation repair; and instrument design and modification. In addition to providing electronic and computer maintenance on the equipment in nearly all the major departmental instrument facilities, they perform a great variety of essential services for the department including:
Designing and constructing new electronic equipment for specialized research projects and to enhance capabilities of existing instruments.
Repairing and maintaining electronic, electro-optical and electro-mechanical equipment and instrumentation (this includes everything from magnetic stirrers to ultrafast lasers systems to high-field NMR machines).
Providing components and advice for electronically oriented research projects.
Purchasing, installing, repairing, and upgrading computer equipment (both common use and individual faculty).
Purchasing, installing, trouble-shooting and upgrading software throughout the department.
Maintaining servers for both local use and computer communications outside the department.
Providing software support for both the business needs and the research needs of the faculty, departmental staff and instrument facilities.
Maintaining the computer systems and software for the undergraduate Learning Resource Center (LRC) consisting of 25 networked computers and printing resources.
