CHM593- Applied Projects: Glassblowing

The Glassblowing Facility offers a comprehensive course in scientific glassblowing for graduate students in Chemistry. The course is designed to allow each student to learn basic glass working techniques that will enable them to do repairs and simple glassware constructions in the laboratory. Many research groups within the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry use extensive amounts of glassware to facilitate their research.  After completion of the course, each student has a more complete understanding of the skills involved in scientific glassblowing.

Teaching and training is a vital aspect of operations. A credit course (CHM 593/Applied Project - Glassblowing) is offered each year to train graduate students in basic glassblowing operations. Frequent seminars and workshops are conducted for graduate students to help improve their skills in glassblowing and vacuum techniques. The Glassblowing Facility maintains the only active Scientific Glassblower Apprentice Training Program in the United States. Two apprentices have been successfully trained in the last 9 years. The facility personnel actively participate in community outreach programs initiated by the university.

This class is limited to 6 students per semester.  Please email us if you would like to get on the waiting list for Spring 2006.  Please include your name, phone number and your affiliation with the university.  Spaces are available on a first come - first serve basis; giving Chemistry graduate students priority.   We will contact you in November, if you will be able to sign up for the class.

The laboratory manual for CHM-593 Applied Project Glassblowing has been compiled from many sources throughout the years. The techniques demonstrated in the manual and taught in the course are considered the "classic method" of glassblowing.
