Information for Fall 2008 semester

Welcome to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry! Please read the important information listed below.

For all New Students

  • TA Training - TA Training begins on August 4. You will want to arrive before that date to get settled and explore the campus.
  • Immunization records
Students MUST submit a copy of their Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) immunization records to the ASU Student Health Center before they can register for classes. The record must show a history of two injections with the dates of when your MMR immunization was received. OR a blood test showing you are immune to Rubiola. Information and form can be found at: http://www.asu.edu/studentaffairs/health/nurseclinic/immunizations/
  • Activate ASU Email Account - Please do it as soon as possible.
go to: https://techbase.asu.edu/wiki/index.php/E-mail_at_ASU - type in the characters shown and accept the terms.
  • Class Registration - You will meet with a temporary mentor during the Orientation to assist you in selecting your Fall Semester courses. You should; however, register for research hours; just to be sure everything is in place for when you purchase your ASU ID and for any scholarship/fellowship money you will be receiving. You can make adjustments to the schedule after your meet with your mentor. Enroll in at least 9 hours of research as follows:

    Chemistry PhD – CHM 792 72662
    Biochemistry PhD – BCH 792 80284
    Chemistry MS - CHM 592 72653
    Biochemistry MS – BCH 592 80282

  • Health Insurance – Health insurance is through the Chickering Group http://chickering.com/. Health insurance for Fall 2008 begins on August 16.
  • Sun Card - The ASU identification card is called the Sun Card. You can get this in the south side of the lower level of Memorial Union – inside the bookstore. The cost is $25. You will need to have your ASU ID number and a picture ID with you.
  • Update Address – It is important to update your address on the ASU Interactive, especially if you are receiving a fellowship or student financial aid.
  • Online Purchase Parking Decal
Once you have activated your ASURITE you can then go to the Parking webpage and click on “Commuter Student Parking Information” to see how to get a permit: http://www.asu.edu/dps/pts/

For Domestic Students

  • Your first meeting for Orientation has been scheduled for Monday, August 4, 2008. When you arrive on campus, stop by the office of Martha McDowell, Graduate Programs Coordinator, located in the Bateman Physical Sciences Building, Room D103. She is available to assist you and answer any questions you may have. You can visit the ASU maps website: http://www.asu.edu/map/ or you can view the map we created for you with the locations highlighted.
  • Just as a tip, bring a solar umbrella or a rain umbrella. This is really useful during the summer months in because it will keep the sun off you when you have to walk around campus.

For International Students

  • Ideally, we would like all international students to arrive the week of July 28, 2008. When you arrive on campus, you need to check in with the International Student Office in the Student Services Building, Room 265. There is a mandatory meeting for all incoming international students on August 19th and will be included on the schedule for our departmental orientation. Also plan to see Martha McDowell, Graduate Programs Coordinator, in the Bateman Physical Sciences Building, Room D 103. She has an additional information packet for you. You can visit the ASU maps website: http://www.asu.edu/map/ or you can view the map we created for you with the locations highlighted.
  • International Students should keep ALL I-20’s that they receive from ASU for the duration of their studies here. It is good to keep a record of these in case you are required to present them at any given time.
  • You will need to schedule the SPEAK test or Interview Test as soon as possible after arriving. Martha McDowell will give you instructions on how to do this when you meet with her. You must achieve a score of 55 or higher in order to be certified as a Teaching Assistant. The first time you take the test, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry will pay for it. Click HERE for more information on English language requirements and support options for international students.
  • If you want to contact a current international student came from your home country and ask about academic and social life at ASU, please visit Information for International Students .
  • Lastly, you MUST bring your official degree certificate or diploma in order to finalize your admission status with the Graduate College. This certificate must be presented to the Graduate College in Wilson Hall (see map).
  • Just as a tip, bring a solar umbrella or a rain umbrella. This is really useful during the summer months in because it will keep the sun off you when you have to walk around campus.
